Report: Town fall to late defeat at Posh

16 April 2024

Fleetwood Town fell to a heavy late defeat as Posh struck twice in injury time after a close affair at the Weston Homes Stadium.

It was the start of dreams for Town as Bosun Lawal hit the back of the net within just 13 seconds.

Brendan Wiredu picked up the ball in the defence and went on an adventure deep into the Peterborough half. Unchallenged, Wiredu set up Bosun Lawal to score his sixth of the campaign.

Moments later, Lawal shrugged off the Peterborough number four before being pulled down in the box. The Cods were awarded their first penalty kick of the season - Promise Omochere stepped up and take it but Jed Steer saved the effort downlow to keep the deficit to one.

The action didn’t stop there. Posh levelled the scoring in the 17th minute through Malik Mothersille. Archie Collins broke forward in midfield before passing the ball out to David Ajiboye on the wing. Ajiboye whipped a cross into the box for the Posh number 18 to tap home.

The teams went into the half time break level. Charlie Adam rolled the dice with two substitutions – Tommy Lonergan and Callum Dolan made way for Ryan Graydon and Xavier Simons.

Peterborough United had the lion’s share of the possession with Town breaking on the counter where possible. Xavier Simons and Ryan Broom came close to putting the Cods ahead with Jed Steer saving Simons’ effort and Broom firing just wide moments later.

Another opportunity arose from the penalty spot after Omochere was brought down in the box as he attempted to turn and shoot. This time Lawal stepped up, but it was the same outcome for Town. Jed Steer saved down low to keep the scoring level.

It was Peterborough who would take the lead with momentum on their side. A fortunate deflection in the middle of the pitch allowed Archie Collins to break and go one-on-one with Jay Lynch. He made no mistake and sent Posh 2-1 ahead, punishing Town for not taking their chances.

The Cods continued to battle, but the tie would end in a late heavy defeat. A brace from Jonson Clarke-Harris in injury time succumbed Town to a 4-1 defeat in Cambridgeshire.

With results elsewhere, Town sit still six points from safety with two matches to play. On to Leyton Orient on Saturday.
